Academic Issues
Academic issues can commonly occur when someone is struggling with their mental health. We focus on helping to identify the root cause of the academic problem so that we can develop interventions to overcome the barriers to learning.
Common examples of diagnoses that can contribute to academic problems include:
- Anxiety
- Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorders (ADD or ADHD)
- Autism
- Depression
- Eating disorders
- Learning Disabilities
- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Panic disorder
- Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Social Anxiety
When no intervention or proper diagnostic assessment of academic issues is completed often the concerns can grow to include things beyond academic problems. Without intervention to help identify the root cause of the academic problems they can lead to learning difficulties, underachievement, low self-esteem and emotional/behavioral disturbances. Furthermore, undiagnosed learning disabilities or attentional problems in childhood have been shown to lead to an increased risk of depression and anxiety symptoms later in life.
